CANAL 2 AR Magazine

What happens when you combine print, augmented reality, and filmmaking? We didn’t know either, so Sunday Afternoon and Grand Crew and set to find out! For the second issue of Canal Magazine, we joined forces to expand the horizons of our storytelling capabilities.

Centering around Chinatown, and more specifically Canal St (that’s where the Sunday Afternoon office is), this issue and the supporting film is an homage to this unique NYC neighbourhood. What about its people, its businesses, and itss resident is so capitivating — is it their grit? Their warmth? Their tenacity to respect culture and tradition which modernity rarely rewards?

At Sunday Afternoon, we developed a novel way of combining AR animations, video and print design into one cohesive, experimental magazine.

My Role:
I was one of the designers that developed our AR capabilites for this magazine. I had already developed some workflows for our client AR experiments, and we took that to the web with the help of our in-house developer. We leveraged the power of Apple’s USDZ format and 8th Wall to produce the AR side of things. I also designed plenty of spreads in this issue.

Chasing Light Film

We worked with Grand Crew to produce a short film titled that set out to find common ground in Chinatown, New York with Chasing Light: a living portrait of business and culture, tradition and innovation, people and passion. The film explores Chinatown through the lens of Wellington Chen, a significant figure in the community, as we meet business owners, and people who’ve lived here and the people who keep our streets clean.

Sunday Afternoon and Grand Crew collaborated to find a way to bring snippets of their filmmaking into the magazine, creating an immersive multi-modal reading experience using spatial computing technologies.

Watch the video below, it’s so well made:

Canal St Activation

We also set up an activation on Canal St, letting people in and around the vicinity to experience our experimental with print, film & AR. Peter Phobia illustrated one of the cover spreads, and also painted an entire wall on Canal St.
